This theory was proposed for the first time by Anthony Ashley Cooper (third Earl of Shaftesbury) in his major work entitled "Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times". Then, Francis Hutcheson revived it in his book entitled "An Inquiry into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue", and David Hume expanded it with some modifications. The common feature of all those who speak of moral sense is that they consider moral knowledge to be related to a faculty called "moral sense", which is separate and distinct from other sources of human knowledge such as reason (for Kant), intuition (for George Moore), religion (for all those who believe in Religious decency and obscenity) as well as the famous and conventional senses that we are familiar with, and through that the necessary data is provided for experimental sciences. But there is a difference of opinion between the defenders of this theory about the details and how this sense works. even though there is a significant connection between the claims of these three philosophers, there is an important difference between their views. This study has tried to describe the classical views about moral sense, criticize them and explain the difference between them. اصطلاح «حس اخلاقی» را نخستین بار فلاسفه اخلاق انگلیسی قرن هجده به کار بردند و منظورشان از این تعبیر این بوده که انسان از طریق قوه‌ای فطری، قادر به تشخیص عمل صواب و خطا در موقعیت است. این نظریه نخستین بار توسط ارل سوم شافتسبری در رساله ویژگی‌های انسان‌ها، آداب، آراء و ادوار مطرح شد. سپس فرانسیس هاچسون آن را در کتاب خود با عنوان پژوهش درباره منشا تصورات ما از زیبایی و فضیلت از سرگرفت و دیوید هیوم نیز آن را با اعمال تغییراتی بسط داد. وجه اشتراک همه قائلان به «حس اخلاقی» این است که شناخت اخلاقی را مرتبط با قوه‌ای به نام «حس اخلاقی» می‌دانند که از سایر منابع معرفتی انسان مثل عقل(برای کانت)، شهود (برای جورج مور)، دین (برای اشاعره و همه قائلان به حسن و قبح شرعی) و همچنین حواس معروف و متعارفی که با آن آشنا هستیم و از طریق آن داده‌های لازم برای علوم تجربی فراهم می‌آید، جدا و متمایز است. اما مدافعان این نظریه در مورد جزئیات و نحوه کارکرد این حس اختلاف نظر دارند. شافتسبری، هاچسون و هیوم مدافعان این رای هستند؛ اما با وجود اینکه ادعای این سه فیلسوف مرتبط با یکدیگر است، تفاوت مهمی میان دیدگاه‌های آنها وجود دارد. در این مقاله سعی می‌شود دیدگاه‌های کلاسیک درباره حس اخلاقی تشریح، نقد و تفاوت میان آنها توضیح داده شود.
