Abstract
Emergence, as one of the prominent positions in the philosophy of mind, is grounded in the claim that certain higher-level properties and phenomena are not reducible to lower-level physical properties. This article, focusing on property emergence as one of the most important varieties of emergence, examines the nature and limits of non-reductionism, a notion that plays the most fundamental role among the components of emergence. Employing a descriptive–analytic method, the study shows that among the various kinds of irreducibility—both epistemological and ontological—the form emphasized by proponents of property emergence is the ontological irreducibility of higher-level phenomena (such as mental states like consciousness) to base-level physical properties. An analysis of the foundations of physicalism and the distinction between reductive and non-reductive physicalism shows that property emergence, although formulated within a physicalist framework, is nonetheless committed to the genuine irreducibility of the higher level through its emphasis on components such as downward causation, novelty, and the like. By examining the concept of reduction and its various classifications, this paper clarifies that the irreducibility intended by advocates of property emergence is not epistemological but ontological in nature, implying the existence of new and real properties that are not present at the base level.
